Jerry Lewis died Sunday at 91. From his start in vaudeville and in his later partnership with smooth-voiced crooner Dean Martin, Lewis created a persona that entertained and influenced a multitude of comic actors and stand-ups, such as Jim Carrey and Eddie Murphy.
The duo later carried their schtick into movies, where Lewis became captivated by the potential of cinema as a visual medium, ideal for comedy. He directed several films in the ‘60s that were popular in their day, and are now regarded as classics around the world. Here are 10 films that demonstrate the breadth of his talent. If you want to check out any of the movies at a later time, save them to your Watchlist, where you can keep a personal list of TV shows and film you’d like to try out.

Lewis’s best-known film is also his most personal, as much about his showbiz experiences as it is about the bucktoothed, nasal-voiced, ultra-nerdy mad scientist he played. Working with his frequent screenwriter collaborator Bill Richmond, Lewis makes “The Nutty Professor” into a parody of Jekyll&Hyde/sci-fi/horror movies, and adds his fearlessly critical take on what an awkward academic circa 1963 might want to become: a phony entertainer who resembles both Dean Martin and the star himself at his most unctuous.

As a director, Lewis took inspiration from silent-era gods like Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, as well as whimsical foreign filmmakers like Jacques Tati. Asked by his bosses at Paramount to crank out a quickie release for the summer of 1960, Lewis delivered the Tati-esque “The Bellboy,” playing a mostly mute Miami hotel employee named Stanley (in a homage to comedian Stan Laurel) who fumbles through a series of densely packed slapstick scenarios with his wealthy guests. Anyone who wonders why Lewis is hailed as a genius should start here, a movie filled with skilled pantomime, fluid camerawork and unexpectedly sophisticated humor.

Lewis, a showbiz lifer, went on stage in vaudeville with his folks as a boy, and quickly developed a comic persona based on jumping around and making funny faces. He joined up with the laid-back Italian-American crooner Dean Martin in the mid-40s, and constructed an act in which his reckless anarchy would ruffle his partner’s cool. The team became even bigger stars in movies, and with the help of director Norman Taurog they told a version of their own story in 1952’s “The Stooge.” Martin plays a failing nightclub singer who starts drawing a crowd when he hires a bumbler as comic relief. The emphasis on irresolvable personality conflicts predicts the duo’s own eventual breakup; but the movie also features healthy helpings of the original Martin/Lewis show, which is still sidesplittingly wild.

Lewis made most of his best films almost entirely on his own, as a star, director, writer, and producer. But he learned a lot from director Frank Tashlin, a former Warner Bros. animator, about constructing perfectly timed, visually precise gags onscreen. The eye-popping 1955 musical “Artists and Models” is the peak of their collaboration, following a juvenile dope and his struggling painter buddy. The movie is wall-to-wall inventive, packed with one-of-a-kind sequences like Lewis pretending to play the piano on an empty drafting board and Martin duetting with himself in the bathroom mirror.

Martin and Lewis found success early on in military comedies, because both of them looked and acted like unlikely soldiers. When Lewis went solo, he donned the uniform a couple of times — most notably in 1959’s entertaining “Don’t Give Up the Ship,” where he plays a sailor explaining in flashback how he lost a destroyer. This is one of Lewis’s more mature films, and an example of how he tried to tone down the wackiness as he got older. Nook for android apk free download.

After he became a director, Lewis continued working occasionally with Tashlin, who helped him understand how to work wild comic sequences into solidly constructed stories, laced with satisfying sentimentality. The 1960 favorite “Cinderfella” flips a well-known fairy tale, with Lewis playing a stressed stepson enchanting a princess. Often, Lewis’s films coast by thanks to a couple of sharp set pieces or an amazing background gag, but here there’s a full-bodied plot with an emotional payoff.

The one-man-band masterpieces Lewis made in the early ‘60s benefit hugely from what the comedian learned from Tashlin’s fearless everything’s-in-bounds ethos; none are as astonishingly assured as 1961’s “The Ladies Man,” which has him playing a clumsy nebbish working at a female-only boardinghouse. A routine with a thug and a hat may be the comic’s funniest five minutes.

Lewis worked so fast and furious during the early ‘60s that his best films are often simply a collection of indelible moments. In 1964’s “The Disorderly Orderly,” Lewis gives one of his most nuanced performances as a med school hypochondriac, who picks up shifts at a sanitarium to help his depressed sweetheart. There’s more pathos and romance here than usual for Lewis, though the director Tashlin still inserts some wonderfully absurdist visual gags, including a montage of wind chimes that ends with a shot of a noisy skeleton hanging outside an anatomy class.

The heyday of Lewis as a comedian ended around 1965, although he made a few passable pictures later on. He did his best work later in his career in more dramatic roles, giving himself over to the visions of filmmakers who could see beneath his veneer of shtick and smarm. In Martin Scorsese’s pungent 1983 film, Lewis plays a talk-show host who gets kidnapped by a creepy fan (Robert De Niro), and the subtle shifts between surface cool and deep anxiety carry with them a startling self-awareness.

It’s hardly his most popular picture, but Lewis is sublime in writer-director Peter Chesolm’s 1995 dramedy “Funny Bones,” where he plays a legendary comedian whose reputation and history make it hard for his son (Oliver Platt) to break through as an entertainer. The star mixes stubborn, selfish arrogance with quiet paternal pride, showing that if he’d had more opportunity, Lewis could’ve had an Oscar-worthy career as a serious actor.
